- Are you accredited by the British Council?
TLSI is not accredited by the British Council. If you are interested in studying at a British Council school you may wish to contact our Sister College London Meridian College: http://www.meridiancollege.co.uk/. - Is TLSI recognised by the Home Office?
As of the 1st of April the new PBS system has been introduced and schools now have to register as a sponsor with the Home Office. TLSI is currently undergoing changes to qualify for accreditation and subsequently approval by the Home Office. Our sister college www.meridiancollege.co.uk has already been accepted as a TIER4 sponsor. This however does not apply to EU students or students who do not require a student visa.
- Can I change my starting date and should I pay for it?
You can change your starting date one time free of charge before the commencement of your studies. A second request for change will be charged at £35.00
- Are the books included in the price? If not, how much does it cost?
Books are not included in the courses fees. You can purchase them from the book stores or at the school. They cost on average £14.00. From time to time we have second hand books available at lower prices.
- How do you run the classes?
Each lesson is 3 hours and 10 minutes with a 10 minute break in the middle.
- Do you do summer courses? What is the price for such a course?
Our courses run all year round so you can come summer, spring, winter or autumn. For time to time we may have special offers for certain courses, so keep an eye on our website for regular updates.
- Do you offer degree courses?
TLSI does not offer degree courses. If you are planning on doing a degree course we can prepare you for your IELTS exam.
- When does the IELTS preparation course start?
You can join the IELTS course on any Monday. Make sure you join the right course as there are two different IELTS courses available.
- How long does the IELTS course take?
This depends on your starting level.
- How do I find out what is the most suitable level for me?
Upon arrival at the school you will be given an entry-level test. Based on this and a short interview with our DOS you will be placed in a level suitable for you.
- How many books do I need to buy during the whole course?
This depends on the duration of your course but you should count on spending 12 weeks on one level.
- How many weeks of holidays am I entitled to have?
8 months to one year: 12 weeks holiday, including school holidays. 6 to 8 months: 8 weeks holiday, including school holidays. 3 to 6 months: 4 weeks holiday, including school holidays. Less than 3 months: no holiday entitlement This holiday entitlement is not mandatory. Students may use it as a whole or in part. The holiday period is part of the study period and is not at the end of it. In other words, a 52-week course is a total of 52 weeks and not 52 weeks + 12 weeks holiday. Please note that the dates indicated in the TLSI holidays schedule only apply to class based courses at TLSI.
- Do I start from the same lesson as when I left for holiday?
No if you go on holiday for a short period you will join the same class when you come back. However if you go away for a longer period you may be assigned to a different class when you return from your holiday.
- When can I start the General English classes?
You can start your classes every Monday provided it is not a bank holiday. Courses that have a fixed starting date are updated on the website.
- Do you always have free spaces to join the classes?
We can't always guarantee a space at your chosen time however we will try to accommodate your needs and allocate you to a class suitable for you.
- How long does it take for you to send the Certificate of Enrolment?
We try to deal with your request within 48 hours. If you come to the registry you may collect your documents on the spot.
- Can I study more than 15h/w?
Yes we have different programmes available. Visit our website to get details on our semi-intensive and intensive courses.
- Can I study less than 15h/w?
If you need a student visa then 15h/w is the required minimum however if you are an au pair or you do not need a visa then we can organise a part time course for you.
- How many levels do you offer?
We have seven levels available starting from Beginners up to Advanced.
- I want to apply to get my visa, but I don't want to attend the classes. Can you help me?
It is the Home Office requirement that you try to attend your classes for a minimum of 85%. However if you have legitimate reasons for your absence such as illness or personal problems it is important to keep the school informed so we can keep your file up to date.
- Do you offer any preparation courses for Cambridge, IELTS or Trinity?
We offer all the above. The Cambridge Exam preparation courses have a fixed duration and are done 12 weeks before the exam. The IELTS prep course you can join on any Monday and the IELTS exams are held regularly every month. The Trinity exams can be taken every month at our Finsbury Park Branch and are open to all levels (even beginners!).
- What is the Cambridge exam and why should I take it?
Cambridge offers a range of exams, which establish the level of a student's English. These qualifications are prestigious and widely recognised, enhancing student employment opportunities and confidence with the English language. The most popular exams are the First Certificate in English (FCE), which is for Upper-Intermediate level students and the Cambridge Advanced Certificate (CAE) for Advanced students. TLSI offers preparation courses for both of these exams.
- What is the IELTS exam and why should I take it?
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System, an exam which covers Speaking, Listening, Reading & Writing skills. Most universities in the UK require non-native speakers to achieve an IELTS score for 6 or more before being accepted onto a degree course. certain professional bodies (e.g. General Medical Council) also require non-native speakers to achieve an IELTS score before they can practice in this country. - What is the Trinity exam and why should I take it?
Trinity is a widely recognised examining board that offers Spoken ESOL exams covering 12 grades, from beginner to an almost native speaker level of fluency. A Trinity qualification can increase a student's confidence with spoken language and boost their realistic employment opportunities.
- How long does it take for me to move from one level to another?
A committed, serious student can progress from one level to the next every 12 weeks on average.
- Are the teachers native English speakers?
We employ highly experienced and qualified native and non-native speakers.
- Are you flexible with the class times?
Yes: students can choose to study in the morning, at lunchtime, or in the afternoon. A student may choose to change their study time during the course. However, if moving to a more expensive session, the difference must be paid. For details of our study times please see our website.
